The check engine light is one of the most common dashboard lights and can mean a variety of things.

You’re driving peacefully, humming along with the radio, and all of a sudden you see one of the dashboard warning lights illuminate in your peripherals. You glance over, analyze the light, and realize you have no idea what it means. Is your car minutes from exploding or is your gas cap not on tightly? Dashboard lights might mean a variety of things, some obvious and others complicated, and there are a few tell-tale signs to determine the severity of the light and what you need to do moving forward.

Color of the Light

The color of the light is a good indicator of how critical the issue is. If the light is blue or green, it is not a severe issue and can often be an option in use, such as cruise control. If you see a red, orange, or yellow light, which often points to a failure to a system, that likely means a minor component needs replacing or there is an issue that should be taken care of in the immediate future.
